Develop thick skin – advice for young journalists

“Develop thick skin.”

That was my response when I recently met an aspiring young journalist for coffee.

She was writing a paper for a class and asked me what advice I would give to future journalists.

Case in point - a message I received via Facebook after changing my hairstyle.

Last week, my stylist, Elisha at Blush Haus of Beaute, suggested a new look: the “long bob” or lob.

I heard a ton of compliments from colleagues, friends and viewers. Even without the validation from others, I love it.

But as they say, you can’t please them all. Here’s the message:

I shouldn’t be surprised by this after my years in the business.

Still, it never ceases to amaze me what people say to me and my colleagues.

They can be very candid and sometimes, hurtful.

Of course, it speaks to the fact that when people invite you into their homes every night, they really feel like you are friends.

But, as they say, with friends like these, who needs enemies?!

I’m not posting this for sympathy or to fish for compliments, but to illustrate why those getting into this business need to develop thick skin. I've heard far worse than this!

As far as this comment, I certainly would not go to his wife for a cut/color after having my hair called a “rats nest” - even if it did look like one. For the record, it didn’t.

Such a strange approach to attracting business!

At the station, we wouldn’t call people uninformed and then tell them to tune in.

At Sona, the marketing plan certainly wouldn’t be to call people out of shape and then advise them to come in to work out.

And as I always do, I’m going to focus on the positive and kind comments from my friends and viewers, instead of one negative one.

If you haven't see the new do yet, here's the reveal from last week:
